Competence for ESD…

“In this district, there are many children who live below the poverty line. There is a great diversity which is fantastic, but it shows when we carry out various activities such as gatherings, taking the bus, going for a walk in the forest, that there are many children who simply lack experience. And I believe in Norway that the most important thing we can give children, whether it is in kindergarten or school, is to give them activities where they build experiences of meeting people and different situations that build on social competences and that they gain skills about how they will face the world when they leave school”. The role of the school in relation to sustainability is…

“The school can be a socially responsible body and there is much to be gained in relation to that. It will also do something in the long term for economic conditions if everyone has equal opportunities and gets an education. We have a higher proportion of parents with low education, with low income, which is directly linked to the expected learning outcomes of the students. By addressing the social issues we are indirectly addressing the financial situation as these are closely related”. (school leader)

Advantages of an all-day school…

“In recent years we have talked a lot about the teams around our students. At our school we believe in Urie Bronferbrenner’s theory, which is theoretically rooted in a developmental ecological perspective and in his model that states, “it takes a village to raise a child”. It is about school-home cooperation, it is about the home, but also about the relationship between school and home, it is about the relationship in and to the immediate environment, local team activities and participation in other arenas and how the relationships between these different arenas affect children’s development. This is not something we have invented, we know that this works based on research”. (school teacher)
